Why Human Resources Is Failing Women — And It’s Scarier Than You Think

Human Resources Is Painfully Unprepared to Protect Women, It’s Frightening

With so many companies trying to support and amplify their reproductive health benefits, one can’t help but think that HR teams might be unprepared to handle those requests and conversations.

Trust Issues in HR

Employees don’t typically trust HR and avoid reaching out to their Talent Partners for various issues.

… so I can’t help but wonder what processes and systems are being put in place to build trust between those needing reproductive help and their HR teams and managers.

In an ideal world, discussing your reproductive health and needs with your Manager and HR team would be unnecessary. Sadly, many pregnant people who had to disclose have seen their careers hindered as a result.

The Issue of Documentation

After almost two decades partnered with HR teams, the concern remains: will they require a “paper trail” of requests and approvals as usual, or will they trust employees’ needs and act accordingly?

The uncertainty surrounding conversations arises when discrimination, biases, inequities, and unfair treatment already affect women and the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Reality of Unpreparedness

Because, I don’t know about you, I’ve already seen so many HR professionals celebrate the news this week. Yes, you read that right.

Another pressing concern is data. How is it stored? Who has access? What happens if audited? Is the legal department involved? How are data anonymity and security handled?

Travel and Accommodation Arrangements

For companies offering to cover travel expenses, the question arises: how are employees supported in booking accommodations anonymously? Are arrangements taken care of, or must employees handle it, risking their safety?

I have more questions than answers… and I truly wish I had all the answers, but I just don’t. I’m angry, defeated, sad, tired, and jaded.

I hope you are all taking care of yourselves and yours.
